Hi Steve,
IIRC you checked that /etc/texmf/dvips/pdftex.map exist. Then check also
that /usr/share/texmf/dvips/config is a link to /etc/texmf/dvips

You may run pdftex with -kpathsea-debug=63 and send the portion
related to pdftex.map and previous lines.
