(I'm neither a designer nor visually impaired so take my feedback with some grains of salt.)

It looks better to me, but I'm not sure how much better it would be for someone needing the high contrast. Would they identify the difference between the black and dark blue ?

I'm copying devian-accessibility in case they have an opinion.

As you said it's not making things worse so AFAIC feel free to go for any option you prefer.
