I knew what I wanted was possible. The problem I ran into a year ago when I last pursued it was dearth of user friendly selection guides indicating which components were physically compatible. Specifically which displays were compatible with with which Pi's. I've accidentally discovered what part of the problem was. Historically there have been two different GPIO headers.
