What happens if, as a test, you select Thunar as your preferred file
manager, and then double-click on the Trash icon?
It opens!
I have not tried spacefm. What happens if you try to open Trash directly with spacefm?
spacefm trash:///
In terminal? This:
kaye@laptop:~$ spacefm trash:///
/home/kaye/.gtkrc-2.0:3: Unable to locate image file in pixmap_path: "foo.bar"
/home/kaye/.gtkrc-2.0:4: Unable to locate image file in pixmap_path: "foo.bar"
