I had the same thing a while back. I too always thought .local was the
recommendation and at the time .home was used by a phone company so
thought it best not to use that.

Which phone company was that, and when?

That would have been BT 15 years or so ago.
I know they use home.bt.com but I must have seen ( or thought I did ).home as the top level domain somewhere to do with them.
