You can use a mouse in a console using gpm (aptitude install gpm)

and in X it is configured within XF86Config-4 or xorg.conf (depending on
whether you're using xorg or XFree86)

either do dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

or manually edit the conf file itself

Usually, on i368 and amd64 the mouse is on /dev/psaux
