The command for splitting files in unix is .... split! To split a file
into high density floppies, use
$ split -b 1423k file part.
This will take file `file', and generate parts named `part.aa',
`part.ab'. etc.
See man split.
(by the way, this seems a candidate for a FAQ or tip)
