per-user font caching in /tmp (was: Bug#388399: FTBFS problems on alpha, mips[el]: Please help debugging)

What solution do you investigate? There are two possibilities that come
to my mind:

* Don't define VARTEXFONTS at all. In that case VARTEXFONTS will default
  to KPSE_DOT, which is the current directory. That way we will never
  write outside the build directory. But I don't know if there are any
  build systems that would get confused by having lots of mf-files in
  the current directory.

* Don't define VARTEXFONTS at all and make a Debian-specific patch to
  mktex.opt so that MT_VARTEXFONTS is set to a proper user specific
  directory. One could, eg, just use TEMPDIR allready that is allready
  set.
