pool_size changed?

I got buffer overflow when using pdflatex from the latest unstable
package:  tetex-bin 1.0.7+20011202-3

changed the pool_size in /etc/texmf/texmf.cnf to 500000 that helped

so I wondered if it had changed from previous releases? and if that was
intended?? (the document worked with previous releases)
