The good news is that upgrading the kernel to the latest git fixes the oops. The bad news is that it is replaced by a hundred lines of error messages and a hang. Something is still wrong with the esp driver at shutdown. The hardware works fine with solaris 10 and linux runs fine when using a qlogic isp card.
