Basically your system is set up for a SUN keyboard layout, but the 2.6
kernel only supports PC-type keyboard layouts.

Would plugging a generic USB keyboard into the USB card work? It's gotta be worth a shot right?

You can use the installer as a kind of rescue system [1]. After you do
'chroot /target', run 'dpkg-reconfigure console-common' and select 'Keep
kernel keymap'. That should allow you basic use of the keyboard after
rebooting into the installed system again.
