You should check out the security white papers published by Lance
Spitzner at http://www.enteract.com/~lspitz/pubs.html. The Know Your
Enemy series is very good, as is the Armoring Linux paper. There's a lot
of stuff there that you'll want to check out. That site should keep you
busy for a while.
