Re: VTK7 in unstable, future of vtk6

Gert,

(VTK upstream here, for context for those who don't know me.)

I'm glad to hear about this, looking at the VTK 7 packaging will help me in my own efforts to package VTK 9.

I'm somewhat sad to hear that you're dropping Java, -doc, and -example. What are the challenges you're facing with these packages? This would be good for me to know so that I can improve them in VTK 9 and hopefully bring them back for the VTK 9 package. (I believe Tcl/Tk have been dropped from VTK in the latest version, so those won't be coming back.)

Dear all,

I just uploaded vtk7 to unstable and I think it is time to think about
what should remain of vtk6.

IMHO we should drop java, tk/tcl language bindings, remove the -doc and
-example packages and only provide the library and -dev packages, and
the python2 bindings (for now), because the VTK python 2 bindings have
some reverse dependencies and I don't know how the state is to port
these to python3.

If nobody objects I would prepare this stripped upload soon.

best,
Gert
