Bug#884747: fails to start when .config is a symlink, with misleading error message about permissions

Reproducing it in a freshly created user account:

tester@darkstar:~$ ls -l .config
total 32
drwxr-xr-x 2 tester tester 4096 Dec 19 10:11 dconf
drwx------ 3 tester tester 4096 Dec 19 10:11 evolution
drwxr-xr-x 2 tester tester 4096 Dec 19 10:11 goa-1.0
drwx------ 2 tester tester 4096 Dec 19 10:11 pulse
drwx------ 2 tester tester 4096 Dec 19 10:11 Thunar
-rw------- 1 tester tester 632 Dec 19 10:11 user-dirs.dirs
-rw-r--r-- 1 tester tester 5 Dec 19 10:11 user-dirs.locale
drwxr-xr-x 6 tester tester 4096 Dec 19 10:11 xfce4
tester@darkstar:~$ mkdir .etc
tester@darkstar:~$ mv .config .etc
tester@darkstar:~$ ln -s .etc/.config
tester@darkstar:~$ libreoffice

(process:18059): dconf-CRITICAL **: unable to create file '/home/tester/.cache/dconf/user': Permission denied. dconf will not work properly.

** (soffice:18059): WARNING **: Couldn't register with accessibility bus: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.
Gtk-Message: GtkDialog mapped without a transient parent. This is discouraged.

The error dialog is the same as in my original message.
