Bug#836935: libreoffice-gtk3: Setting GDK_SCALE and GDK_DPI_SCALE to values other than 1 screws up rendering
Package: libreoffice-gtk3
Version: 1:5.2.0-2
Severity: normal
Dear Maintainer,
libreoffice with the libreoffice-gtk3 package installed fails to render
correctly when the environment variables GDK_SCALE and/or GDK_DPI_SCALE are set
to values not equal to 1.
This can be verified by starting libreoffice as follows:
$ GDK_SCALE=2; GDK_DPI_SCALE=1; libreoffice
Background: These variables are used be people with high density screens (such
as those in modern laptops) to obtain a reasonable widget and font size.
A common setup is to export
export GDK_SCALE=2
export GDK_DPI_SCALE=0.5
in .xinitrx or similar.
Thereby GTK_SCALE=2 scales all widgets in gnome applications by a a factor of 2
and GDK_DPI_SCALE=0.5 reduces the font size back to the original size, as
modern fonts are already rendered in a way that takes into account the dpi of
the screen.
Somewhat surprisingly for me, libreoffice, as opposed to other Gnome apps,
already looks reasonable on a high dpi screen with GDK_SCALE=1 and
GDK_DPI_SCALE=1. So a workaround for the reported problem is to always start
libreoffice with:
$ GDK_SCALE=1; GDK_DPI_SCALE=1; libreoffice
