I think this is a pretty grave bug that causes people to lose work, so
I'd like to see it fixed in OO/stable (because that is what people in
office environments will be using).

Regarding libreoffice:

I set up a fresh squeeze-amd64 install in virtualbox and reproduced
the problem there with OO. Then I removed OO and installed
libreoffice-writer (and dependencies) from squeeze-backports
(1:3.3.2-2~bpo60+1).

The problem does not occur with libreoffice (neither by printing to
the pre-installed "generic printer" which uses lpr, which isn't
installed, nor by printing to file in a non-writeable directory), but
there's no printing error message either in both cases, so there's
room for speculation whether this would occur if the printing error
was correctly displayed.

As I said in my followup, it also happens if you print to file and get
an error there (e.g. because you selected a directory where you don't
have write permissions). I have no clue how to get OO to use CUPS, and
I'd rather not risk my sanity trying to figure it out (why, yes, I
*hate* CUPS), so please try this if you have a working setup.

schönes wochenende,
