path of config-files & logs - special case - package sbnc

Dear Users,

i need your help with a package i started to work on. It's sbnc.
The old patches to "debianize" the package are not working anymore due to upstream changes.

I'm thinking about changing the structure of the paths where files are installed but am unsure if this is debian conform.

The old patches are changing the path for log files and configuration-files hardcoded to /var/log and /etc.
As this binary can run individually by different users, there should not be a hardcoded path.

The above is a showstopper for different users&hosters to use sbnc as they can not provide an individual path anymore.

Furthermore the log files get overwritten by the binary itself - so this should not go to /var/log/ either.
The configuration file is also something, a user should not edit. It's triggered through the binary itself.

Is it possible to put the default configuration and log-files to /var/lib/sbnc - analog to package quassel-core?

Thank you.
