I always forget how to fix 'cannot find -lpthreads' (Was: vcflib new release)

I adapted some patches and now I'm running into[1]

/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lpthreads: No such file or directory
collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status
I've seen this several times before and always forget the fix. :-(
