Re: laptop recommendation
hi!
im currently searching a nice laptop which works well
with debian. basically it should have a at least 15" big
screen and at least 1400x1050 px resolution..
would be also great if it would not be too heavy and
big.. anybody got an recommendation for that?
I would look at ASLab (www.aslab.com) or iDot (www.idot.com).
Here is my opinion, based on looking at their sites and emailing their sales
people (have not purchased from either, but will probably purchase from iDot
in the near future).
ASLab:
-Default OS is RH8.0, option for RH7.3, or no OS (by special request)
-Will setup multiboot for you if you wish
-Will parition drive to your specs (you email their techs with your order
number and your specs for partition sizes)
-Produce custom kernel tweaked for their machines (available from their ftp
site)
-[NEGATIVE] only have one model, but price is OK if it is what you are
looking for
iDot:
-Default OS is WinME (who in their right mind?!?!) with the option for most
any Windows variant or no OS (you $95 back for choosing no OS)
-[NEGATIVE] do not explicitly support Linux
-Six or seven different models to choose from
-Very reasonable prices, currently offering free shipping on notebooks
-Lots of customization options
In my opinion both are excellent choices because they understand that not
everyone is a MS zombie. They believe you have a choice as to what OS you
want to run. There are others out there, but I don't recall their sites off
hand. Those are two that have stuck in my mind for a while. There are also
similar sites offering Linux or blank laptops in Europe.
