Yes, what I meant was that I found it difficult to assess what I'd done
since lopping off the leading article made things scan so badly for me.

Ah, right - that is much better than simply lopping off the preposition
as had been done originally.

It depends on how freestanding the description is - in most of the
contexts where it is displayed the partial sentence doesn't scan so
badly since something along the lines of "$PACKAGE is..." is implied.
