[debian-knoppix] power down and console text size

two things that i'm having trouble getting to work with a home built kernel is 
the auto-power down and console text size.  they worked flawlessly with the 
default knoppix kernels, but i've never gotten them to work right.  what 
options set these and how should they be set?
