To put Andreas' idea into sharp focus, picture the following possibility.
Instead of downloading a Knoppix CD, you install debian over the network,
from CD, or whatever way you like, with configuration files from knoppix.net.  
A script makes your installation into an .iso image and voila!  you have 
a Knoppix CD.  Now instead of providing us with CDs, Klaus has to provide 
us with configuration files.

There is no reason that I know of that this could not be made to work 
for all architectures supported by Debian.  Of course it is a lot of work!
But the idea itself is I believe a good one.
