Bug#740556: linux-image-3.2.0-4-amd64: kernel BUG at /build/linux-FpPMO6/linux-3.2.54/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/i915_gem_execbuffer.c:1275!

Package: src:linux
Version: 3.2.54-2
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,
This problem made my system unusable and could only be fixed by power cycling.
Feel free to raise the severity.
I have left severity as normal since even for me it seems rare, and may be a
hardware problem.

The system was running normally for months before this, and seems to be fine
now.

   * What led up to the situation?
Computer was on but idle overnight.
I've attached the kern.log that shows errors. The first one seems to concern
graphics (i915), but later
ones concerned disk access.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
     ineffective)?
Manipulating keyboard and mouse did not cause a signal to be sent to the
monitor.
ssh'd in. The ssh session was cut off after a few minutes. I resumed it.
The terminal showed I/O errors reading some files in /etc and with writing to
the journal log.
top did not show anything unusual.
I attempted to su or sudo, but got segmentation faults.
df also produced a segfault.
Turned of the hardware power switch and then turned it back on.

   * What was the outcome of this action?
My earlier actions were ineffective; power cycling worked and brought the
system back up.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?
I expected that the computer would just work, not crash.

The system is pretty new, but it has a motley array of disks, some old, in it.
Many are in an external case connected via USB.
sda is solid-state and is not the home drive of the sytem.

Video is the intel graphics (HD4000, I think) on the XEON CPU.

I included some earlier messages about power to the CPUs in the log in case
they are relevant; I get those other messages regularly.
System is on a UPS.
