Severity: normal
Hi,
I just reinstall my distribution and change from x86 arch to amd64 arch.
On fist startup, when kde load is finished, a kernel oops is raised:
"
Kernel failure message 1: EDAC amd64: WARNING: ECC is disabled by BIOS.
Module will NOT be loaded. Either Enable ECC in the BIOS, or set 'ecc_enable_override'.
Also, use of the override can cause unknown side effects. amd64_edac: probe of 0000:00:18.2 failed with error -22 k8temp 0000:00:18.3: Temperature readouts might be wrong - check erratum #141

"
I found the same problem on ubuntu bug tracker: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/422536 and it is seem to be fixed.
I did not notice any visible consequences on the system yet.
Is there a risk of data loss or others serious consequences? (I hesitate to reconnect and set up a raid1 soft on this system.)
Best regards,
Thomas PIERSON

My interpretation of the warnings: > [ 5.711514] EDAC MC: Ver: 2.1.0 Jan 10 2010 > [ 5.713134] EDAC amd64_edac: Ver: 3.2.0 Jan 10 2010 > [ 5.713174] EDAC amd64: This node reports that Memory ECC is currently disabled, set F3x44[22] (0000:00:18.3). > [ 5.713180] EDAC amd64: WARNING: ECC is disabled by BIOS. Module will NOT be loaded. > [ 5.713181] Either Enable ECC in the BIOS, or set 'ecc_enable_override'. > [ 5.713182] Also, use of the override can cause unknown side effects. > [ 5.713194] amd64_edac: probe of 0000:00:18.2 failed with error -22 The Error Detection And Correction (EDAC) driver amd64_edac requires the BIOS to set up error reporting for ECC RAM. If you are using ECC RAM, make sure this is enabled in the BIOS setup. > [ 5.793132] i2c i2c-0: nForce2 SMBus adapter at 0x1c00 > [ 5.793136] ACPI: I/O resource nForce2_smbus [0x1c40-0x1c7f] conflicts with ACPI region SM00 [0x1c40-0x1c45] > [ 5.793190] ACPI: If an ACPI driver is available for this device, you should use it instead of the native driver > [ 5.793192] nForce2_smbus 0000:00:01.1: Error probing SMB2. This device is probably used by the BIOS for hardware monitoring. You should be able to use the 'thermal' driver or a manufacturer-specific ACPI driver to read from the hardware monitor. > [ 10.200103] powernow-k8: Found 1 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+ processors (2 cpu cores) (version 2.20.00) > [ 10.200115] [Firmware Bug]: powernow-k8: No compatible ACPI _PSS objects found. > [ 10.200116] [Firmware Bug]: powernow-k8: Try again with latest BIOS. powernow-k8 is a CPU frequency scaling driver and it requires help from the BIOS. Maybe the acpi_cpufreq driver will work on this system instead. Otherwise a BIOS upgrade may be available that will allow powernow-k8. None of the above indicates that the system is unstable. However, lack of ECC means that hardware memory faults will not be detected. Ben. -- Ben Hutchings friends: People who know you well, but like you anyway.Attachment: signature.asc
