Bug#268609: Bug#270198: Acknowledgement (kernel-image-2.6.7-1-686: does not detect ATA om Intel mobo)

As outlined in the original report, the Sarge system on my SCSI drive recognised both ATA and SCSI drives when in the Pentium II 233 system.

When installed into the Pentium III system, it did not recognise the ATA drive.

In the former, the IDE chipset is Intel LX, and the latter BX.

In the latter it seems that ide-generic is required; when I modprobed this module the ATA drive springs, or rather, limps into life.

I posted performance figures for this system using 2.4.27-1-686 in #270199.
The 2.4 kernel approached 30 Mbytes/sec on this system.
In contrast:
ns:/# hdparm -t /dev/hda{,,}

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffered disk reads:   68 MB in  3.00 seconds =  22.65 MB/sec

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffered disk reads:   70 MB in  3.07 seconds =  22.78 MB/sec

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffered disk reads:   58 MB in  3.03 seconds =  19.14 MB/sec
