Exactly at what stage does it lock up? What are the last messages? Where
did you get that kernel from? Self-compiled? Which config? What hardware
configuration are you running on? What's your root filesystem type? On
what kind of HDD does it sit, to what kind of controller is it
connected?

Don't spend any time resurrecting 2.2.x. Just get 2.4.x or even 2.6.x
up'n'running.
