Struggling to start with PSK31

I'm running kpsk on debian sarge with the aim of making my first QSO
as a ham. The receiving side seems to be going fairly well, but I have
some questions on the transmission side.

1. Because I don't run any kind of desktop (I rely entirely on my
window manager), the kpsk application can't find DCOP (because it
does not exist). That, I assume, prevents commmunications between
Kt applications. Will this be a problem as I pursue PSK31 using
kpsk (such as in setting up QSO logging?). Can DCOP be installed
   without having any desktop?

2. I assume that to transmit, it seems I must define the interface for
my PTT device in kpsk. I'm only guessing, but I assume what's
needed is /dev/ttyS0, which I provide. It turns out this interface
is in the dialout group, and so I add my UID to the dialout group in
/etc/groups. Yet, when I start kpsk, it says "Cannot open PTT
device /dev/ttyS0: Permission denied". The /dev/ttyS0 has
   permission 660.

3. I'm having trouble understanding the kpsk instructions for "tuning"
the sound for my transceiver in relation to my ALSA sound driver
(alsamixer). I put a dummy load on my FT-817, minimize RF power
out, and do C-t to "Tune" the transmission levels. This sends a
carrier. I should then increase soundcard volume for a max
POWER/SWR/SLC meter reading on my transmitter. Is "soundcard
volume" simply the "Master Playback Level" in alsamixer? If so,
that has no effect on the S meter of my FT-817 (perhaps because
I've not suceeded in getting the PTT device defined).
