I upgraded kernel from 2.2.20 to 2.4.20 and the problem disappeared. So this was some kind of a new-glibc-with-oldish-kernel problem. Anyway, if you use 2.2.20 kernel with glibc 2.3.1, there still is the problem. Issues with old kernels are propably not high priority bugs. - Joonas
