I've seen similar problems occur when USB devices did not get enough power via the USB cable. And also when using long cables in USB2 (ehci) mode. So try a short, thick-wired low-resistance cable, and try USB1.1 (non-ehci) mode. Also try inserting a powered USB hub between computer and device.
