Hi Thomas,

a detailed documentation of what is needed, how to create it and how to use it
would help a lot.

For instance, is it possible to do anything useful with a tarball
dump as a starting point ?  What would be the advantage compared with
providing our users with an easy way to create the images themselves ?

We definitly need to provide documentation on how to generate those image themselves. As for open source programs, we need to provide the way images were build and possibility for users to regenerate themselves the images.

I manage in my lab a private cloud with Open Nebula. I need to generate my own images for my configuration/setu, with the packages I need, to provide to my users specific images.
Providing pre-generated images is nice for many but not all Debian users.

Would be perfect if we could generate images for Amazon etc... from scratch on a Debian server/desktop (not connecting to Amazon, and generate a new image from an existing one).

Debian distributes CD images with jigdo in addition and in preference to
pre-made images.  Shall we follow that example instead ?

Also, we need to think about the possible overlaps and synergies with the
distribution of "live" images.

Would indeed be nice to be able to get a live OR a raw image (usable in the cloud) using same scripts.

Altogether, just because there are images registered in large commercial clouds
does not necessarly mean that we need to have copies of them in our mirrors.

Have a nice week-end,
