..what if a boot loader plug-in checks the cpu flags?
..code re-use should be possible here, both grub and lilo has nice
menus that can run plug-ins, and a few of the "multi-arch" Debian
installer images will fling an error right into your face, with a
polite suggestion on what to do next, if you try boot an i686 box
with an amd64 kernel.
