I am running as root when I get that error. I ./configure and make as user
mbse, then su to root and make install. I saw this error a couple months ago
while I was looking at unstable and I couldn't "make install" also.

It's required to "make install" that package as root else I get an error "You
are not root!"

ATM I am back to sarge and make install does work fine. There is something
just different enough to give me this error but I'm not sure what, I'll keep
looking.

Aside from this package I don't compile a lot of software so I don't have a
lot of experience in the real world if other packages also have trouble with
make install. Next time I am in etch I'll try another package aside from this
one and see how it goes.

I'm reasonably certain that you "make install" as root on a regular basis with
no problem?
