Since I had made backups of the HDD, and was a bit impatient, I chose for the somewhat dangerous option of first deleting the partitions and then having the Debian installer help me partion the free space on the hard drive.
This went well, and I completed the installation of Debian Linux today, including the apt configuration for a desktop system.
However, if I do another install, I will follow your advice.

The installation went pretty much in the same way as described by Peter Krummrich, who installed about a year ago on a very similar hardware:
I had to point the installer to the zorro8390 driver for my X-surf, and the hardware clock could not be accessed.

Now I have to start learning Linux to get a GUI fired up (or not), and later compile my own kernel...

The CD ISO images were a great help, and the installation very smooth--thanks for the effort put into the Debian installer!
